What is SXSW?

SXSW (South by South West) is a conference held every year in Austin Texas, United States. This conference is divided into 3 major sets of SXSW Interactive, SXSW Music and SXSW Film. First began in 1987, today SXSW is one of the most profitable event in Austin. It’s going to be held from March 12th to March 21st 2010 which attracts more than 15,000 participants every year.

What’s so special about SXSW Events?

As you know that, this whole event of SXSW is divided into three main groups of Interactive, Films and Music. This entire combination make a tremendous get-together hub for people associated with various industries like web, technology, start-ups, music bands, movies etc. So, sensibly open the doors of opportunities, ideas, information and of course lots of businesses too.

SXSW Interactive:

I am a blogger, new media entrepreneur and technology freak. Though, I am not so lucky to attend SXSW but SXSW Interactive would be the best category of event to attend by me.  Interactive was never a part of SXSW till the year 1993. But now, it attracts thousands of professionals from web and technology every year.  Hey, do you know that Twitter was launched in SXSW Interactive in 2007? It’s no wonder why Twitter founders decided to make SXSW a launch pad for their microblogging website which really ruled SXSW conference 2007 and now ruling the world of social media.

If you are a blogger you can also meet some most valued bloggers of the world in SXSW Austin. WordPress is throwing a Wordpress BBQ at SXSW and many wordpress fans are going to attend this.

If you wish to meet Chris Brogan , Darren Rowse and Brain Clark or want to attend SXSW Interactive panels of Google, Twitter or have a great time with Top blogs Mashable and Techcrunch then you are seriously running out of time. SXSW is already going on with full fun and lots of buzz.

SXSW Music was started as music festival and successively became top music festival in United States. It is a best showcase for music talents with more than 80 stages and musicians from all over the globe to attend this event which is not less than a pilgrimage for Musicians.

GWAR is going to pump up some hardcore rock music at SXSW, Dawes and The Doors will be the major attention in SXSW Music too.

and Conference is best for witnessing some finest talents and creative minds behind the scenes. Many top movies have been screened on SXSW. This year A NY Thing, Always a Bride, Beijing Taxi and Brotherhood are some most talkative movies going to be screened on SXSW Film festival.

How many Indians are attending SXSW 2010?

Not too many Indians are going to attend SXSW 2010 but their are few who can be their this time. Most of them are based in U.S so they are definitely not going to miss this opportunity and for them to fly Austin will be fun, but for us who are in India, both time and money are big concern.

One of the biggest name in Social Media is Om Malik of Gigaom Network will be there with his crew.I am not sure about Anil Dash’s plans on SXSW 2010

Yesterday the Google buzz team announced some really cool features soon going to be added on Google Buzz like a full control of user to set what to be shown in your Gmail inbox. Like You’ll be able to choose whether the following buzz items get sent to your inbox:

- Comments on your posts
- Comments on posts after you comment on them
- Comments on posts after you are @replied on them etc. And we can expect these features fully functional within few days. You can read the whole post here..

But today, The dedicated Google buzz team has something new for us. It’s good for those who surf Google buzz from their mobile phones. You can now mute a buzz post directly from your cell device.

Just tapping the post, clicking “>” to bring up the ”More Actions” menu, and choosing “Mute this post.”

Twitter is very interesting but if you want to enjoy twitter more then get a twitter application on your desktop. There are plenty of good twitter applications for desktop but the two best applications are Seesmic and TweetDeck. Both are free to download from their webpages.

I recommend TweetDeck because I use this and I seriously enjoy it. Just go to tweetdeck.com and download it on your computer, run it and you are done ( you need Adobe AIR to run tweetdeck). You can update your twitter account via TweetDeck without logging in twitter.com. Not only twitter but you can even update your facebook and myspace too from TweetDeck. It gives you choice to tweet from desktop, reply, retweets, direct message, follow or un-follow anyone from TweetDeck. It also automatically shorten all long URLs you wish to tweet with your message.

400million people are using Facebook.com and spending more than avg. 50 mins per day(source), This made it world’s biggest and most successful social networking website. Now it’s not just a favorite social networking website for certain professional/educational group. Even teenagers are more enthralled with facebook than their once favorite role playing websites and avatar enabled forums. If you are also a parent of a teenage child who is having facebook fever than you must need some guidance and help to protect your child  from any wanted situation like phishing, spamming, profile hacking, cyber bullying, abuse etc.

Here are some of the points you may find helpful, though I believe that every parent knows how to care their children but sometimes they are unaware of what’s going around them, it won’t be a lie that your 13 yr old knows more than what you know about internet and facebook. So why not try to be step ahead from your child?

I focused on some major points including getting started with facebook, making network, posting on walls, sharing content on facebook groups, pages and sharing photos on facebook.

Getting Started With Facebook

1. First point; be always friendly with your child. That’s the best way to get his trust on you.
2. Teach him what social networking is before allowing him to join Facebook.  I consider social networking is a way to connect virtually with known and unknown people to share information, knowledge and fun.
3. Make some  rules between you and your child to be followed, by both of you strictly.
4. Help your child to create his own facebook profile
5. Don’t use real name on facebook profile, though fill other options truly.
6. Keep Relation Status and Looking For option “Empty”. (check 1st image)
7. Clarify, what to share online and what not to share and why? Children are always ready to throw questions so you be prepared to answer them.
8. Don’t let them share their personal information to anyone anywhere on facebook
9. Personal information includes location, addresses, phone numbers and even some photographs should not shared
10. Profile picture of your child should not expose his/her clear face; better take profile picture zoomed out wearing cap or sunglasses or use any graphic images.
11. Add your name in Family members while filling profile information of your child; this may keep stalkers away from your him/her.

Making Network

1. Teach your child how to make good social network by connecting with good people and avoiding strange people. Introduce your relatives on facebook to your child and then ask some of your close friends to add your child too. Now your child will be surrounded by many known people.
2. Add your child’s friends in your facebook network too.
3. Observe the activities of user connected to your child if you get doubtful.
4. Remove the suspected user from your child’s connection immediately.
5. Report to facebook and save other children too from that suspected user.
6. Make your child join facebook groups relevant to his likes, hobbies and interests.
7. Teach him not to be too friendly with strangers online.
8. Teach him not to be racist online and even offline.
9. Teach him why not to disclose family secrets online.
10. Edit your child’s facebook privacy settings carefully.
11. Keep your child always offline on facebook chat. No No live chats.

Posting On Walls/Groups/Fanpages/Inbox

1. Teach him not to post his/her current location
2. Not to disclose any family or personal secrets
3. Delete if someone one post offensive material on your child’s facebook wall, better don’t allow anyone to post on your child’s wall by editing privacy settings.
4. Don’t let him join hateful/offensive/abusive/porn or controversial facebook groups. Though facebook staff is fighting their best to clean all filth but managing 400 million users is not that easy.
5. Don’t let your child post anything racially anywhere on facebook.
6. Don’t let him/her disclose his/her sentiments or feelings publicly, better talk to him/her personally.
7. Read facebook terms with your child and teach him/her to follow.
8. Check his/her inbox messages every day. Report for abusive content if any.
9. Check sent messages too, you should know what your child talking to others.
10. Get the list of top 10 followers of your child’s profile (Who is following me) This application will show you who is more engaged with your child by frequently posting, liking or replying to his/her updates. However, you cannot find who is viewing his/her profile with this application.

Sharing Photos & Videos on Facebook

1. Before uploading any images, edit privacy settings “Who can see this”. You will get this option while uploading photos from your personal computer.
2. Let him share family photos to only relatives and close friends whom you know and met personally.
3. Don’t let him share his/her own photos, your family photos, his/her room or photo of your house, nearby area or anything which can expose his location and personal details to anyone on facebook.
4. Do you know that if photos are uploaded without editing privacy settings it can be viewed by anyone on facebook. It can also be shared by any user to his network and can spread widely.
5. If you are uploading photos from your digital camera, better crop the size with photoshop if possible. Or use online photo editor websites like picnik.com, lunapic.com or fotoflexer.com all are free services. Google it for more.
6. You should know that all images posted on facebook album can be copied by anyone. Try yourself if you don’t know. Open any uploaded pic—Right Click- save image as. If this doesn’t work then you can even take direct screen shots of that image. So be cautious.
7. Report to facebook for any misuse of photos of your child. There is an option below that particular photo.
8. Don’t allow your child to put photos of someone who is unrelated person on his/her facebook album.
9. Don’t allow to upload any copyrighted /abusive/spam photos

1. Keep the account password of your child with you, keep changing it weekly or randomly.
2. Don’t let him use facebook in his room, keep your PC in public room or hall.
3. Allow only 15-30 mins to be on facebook every day.
4. Discuss with your child his facebook experience every day.
5. Ask him what he came to know from his facebook friends etc. Knowledge, information etc.
6. You should know that facebook is not for users under 13.
7. You should also know that still there are many who break this rule. Don’t let your child do this.
8. Subscribe to some good facebook related websites/blogs to get latest news and happenings. Like insidefacebook.com allfacebook.com however both are unofficial facebook blogs.
9. You should join some facebook groups of parents this will keep you connected and updated with other parents.

What could be the future of Google Buzz in coming days, months and years? Will it be the first successful social networking website by Google? Or Is it going to be just another “easy” version of wave? Are they going to detach Buzz from our Gmail account? What is your take on Google Buzz, how did you felt it when first time you saw Google Buzz in your Gmail?

When I saw Buzz for the first time I was surprised. It was very unlike Google to spring such a big change on so many people without a preceding lab or beta period. This gave me the feeling that Google would probably back this product rigorously. Initially it looked like a bad version of friendfeed but the buzz team has been pushing out updates so fast it is quickly (and radically) improving.

What is your prediction on future of Google Buzz?

I have high hopes for the future of Buzz. If/when it is packaged properly it could become a conversation product that is manageable for the masses. We’re not there yet, we’ve still got a long way to go, but I do believe that Buzz could turn out to be the mayor platform to beat.

What you don’t like of Google Buzz?

From a buzz product developer there are still some programming limits for us. For the rest I do believe that the feedback Google is receiving pretty much sums it up (note for you need to look up the URL of buzz’s appspot, do you know which one I mean?)

What is your take on Google Buzz, how did you felt it when first time you saw Google Buzz in your Gmail?

When Buzz first came out and I heard about it before getting access, I thought it would be just like Google Wave – not very easy to use and not very native. However, when I first started using Google Wave, I was really impressed by how much work I didn’t have to do, like finding and following new people.

What is your prediction on future of Google Buzz?

Let’s say we’re talking a year from now: In a year, I believe more and more Gmail users will embrace Buzz as a way to keep up with news and contacts, much like we see on Twitter now. However, I think that eventually Buzz may branch off into a separate website, but still have the option to have it in Gmail. It’ll be some work in that area, but it could be done.

What you don’t like of Google Buzz?

Mostly, the things I don’t like of Buzz are issues that can easily be fixed within a day of work. My biggest hate is that new posts aren’t always pushed to the top, but ones that get a lot of response show first – what if I already read that one?

I already heard about buzz few days before it started. And I personally really like how it works.

What is your prediction on future of Google Buzz?

It’s still long run for buzz to get massive number of users. There are lots of things which can be improved though. Buzz have chance to become main social network some time in future – but it’s required many thing for Google to do. For example to be #1 Buzz need to allow creating social games inside it like Facebook do.

What you don’t like of Google Buzz?

Lack of available API – currently you can’t do much with it.

What is your take on Google Buzz, how did you felt it when first time you saw Google Buzz in your Gmail?

First impression was: improved Twitter edition implemented with something you use most often – an e-mail. Also, a real time addition of forums discussions, Idea of communication was performed 100 times better than on Google Wave.
But they had startup problems. Some of them where calculated. You think that they didn’t know the problem of auto-following option? (Adding someone you don’t wanna follow like ex-wife and so on.) Yes they did, and they took a risk. Later they publicly apologized for that “mistake”. But it was worth it. They’ve jump started thousands of followers and made first interactions much quicker.
They were in hurry, Some interface bugs they had are smaller damage then wait for Facebook to roll out location aware statuses.

What is your prediction on future of Google Buzz?

It is hard to tell. But war will continue with well known competitors. They all (Facebook, Google, Twitter [and Microsoft with Yahoo?]) will try to get bigger share of real time web. Google will take a cut of cake with Buzz. But I don’t think they will jeopardize Twitter or Facebook with it.

Location component is next big thing on the Web and Google is ready for it. Buzz & maps are great complement together. Augmented reality is near us.

What you don’t like of Google Buzz?

With Buzz is simple: you love it or you hate it. Does who love will continue to use it and it will become yet another communication channel they use on a daily basis.
Personally I don’t like overhead of information those channels give. That’s great for procrastination. Most people use it for private purposes and lose a lot of time on it.

Buzz still have interface problems. You are not sure which buzzes have you read and it’s hard to filter important information.
To become ecosystem like Twitter they need an API. They still don’t have it (complete functionality) and that’s a big problem! As a developer I am still waiting for some API features.

Few weeks ago I met one of my very old and best friend after 3-4 years. All these years we were connected via messenger and sometimes on Facebook,  he used to notice my interest in social media platforms, etc. When we met in person he asked me why I treat social networking so differently than him – in other words, take it so seriously. He is on social network too but only to be connected with friends and relatives and he thinks this is all to be done through social networking sites.

After talking to him I got the idea to write this article on How Much You Understand Yourself On Virtual Platforms - your potential and ability to present yourself. There are possibilities, opportunities and much knowledge flowing for professionals and educationists inside social networks but for that you should have a positive mindset, dedication and a knowledge-hungry attitude.

If you have all the above mentioned attributes but are still confused in presenting yourself on Facebook then keep reading this post. I hope this will help you make your social network fruitful.

How much you understand yourself?

Just because one sunny day you got an invitation from a close friend to join him on Facebook, you accepted it. But now what? If that was your first experience on any social network then you must find everything around you weird. But give it some time and try understanding the whole thing technically. Your Facebook profile is the best way to show how much you understand yourself. Try not to miss out any column while filling in details of your profile… be true to yourself.

Why you are on Facebook?

If you say I am here because all my school friends are here, my girlfriend is here and now my office colleagues and even my ex-boss are on Facebook.  But soon you will realize that there is much more to do on Facebook than just connecting with someone you already know, though nothing wrong in that either.  Think how you can take advantage of a 400 million strong global crowd gathered in one place! Isn’t this is an opportunity to expand your horizon?  Before that check the next point…

What are your likes and dislikes?

The 400 million users of Facebook don’t care what do you like or dislike. This question is more important to you than others because you need a strong and friendly connection in order to benefit. Every human being has his likes, dislikes, fear and perfection in a subject, thing or art. Think where you stand and you will also get the answer of my question “Why you are on Facebook”?

Other than your friends and close relatives, whom you want to be added in your Facebook network and why?

So, now if you are confident of virtually expanding your network and ready to take advantage of this mega crowd of humans then sit tight and start adding people to your network, don’t just add your friend’s friends. Also add people whom you find suitable to your likes, needs and purpose.

Where you can get more friends on Facebook according to your niche or need?

Use Facebook’s real time search options, find related groups, fan pages, and people. Add some classy Facebook applications and play cool games. Start communicating with others via updates &comments. don’t be shy or reserved.

Other than getting connected with friends and relatives, most people join Facebook for professional, spiritual and social reasons or just to have fun.  Now, you have to find and create your own standing between your connections. Hope you now understand yourself better!

As you all know that buzrr.com was first to introduce something like a tweetmeme of Google buzz with a buzz this button.

2 days back another and in my opinion the best Re-Buzz plugin till now is all ready to spread your blog posts with your buzz followers. ReBuzzThis.com is a new shining kid in the ground of Google Buzz applications. Zachary Collins, who is famous for his Twitter Application Database Twtbase.com is the CEO and developer of ReBuzzThis.com has announced that more than 30,000 buttons are already served to different websites in less than 3 hrs and expecting the number goes higher till 100,000 soon. Zachary said that every time a page is shared by rebuzzthis button it also appears on the website home page similar to digg, though the main function of rebuzzthis button is similar to buzrr button which counts how many times a post being shared on Google Buzz. But

Features: There are 9 different types of buttons available on rebuzzthis wordpress plugin, just choose the style you want and update settings. Installation is too easy and plugin looks clean and work perfectly. Rebuzzthis is in beta right now and we hope Zachary will make it to our expectations.

If you feel you are getting addicted of Google buzz and can’t find a better option of being online on your gmail account whole day then I got a really nice desktop application for you to check, comment and update your Google Buzz account right from your desktop. Google Buzz Desktop Application gives you some cool features to use your buzz account.

I find this application pretty good though it’s in its beta stage and I hope there will be more development in future by the developer. The developer of this application is a Spanish Techie and some words are in Spanish while installing this application, so use your common sense then getting lost in new language.

Ok, so here are some good and not so good things I found about Google Buzz Desktop:

Good

• Easy and fast installation
• Rocking Look of the application ( very close to any mobile browsing experience)
• It’s on my desktop; I don’t need to open my web browser
• With Google Buzz I can also check my Gmail inbox, Orkut, Google reader, YouTube and many other Google sites

Not So Good

• Profile Images not working
• Mouse over pointer not working( somewhere)
• Location was not working for me

How to Install?

1. Simply download it from this blog.
2. Run the application on your desktop
3. Login with your gmail id ( wait till it gives you “MENU” option”)
